First Year Applicants

First Year Applicants

We are looking for students who have the academic preparation, personal qualities, and motivation to thrive in GW’s dynamic environment. Our students are committed to bridging the distance between ideas and action. They pursue questions and seek expert answers from policymakers, researchers, and faculty whose scholarship pushes the boundaries of what's possible.

As a GW student, you'll go a step further: you'll take what you learn and expand it on a global scale.

Step 2: Prepare Application Materials

Your application consists of a complete Common Application or Coalition Application, a personal essay, a letter of recommendation from a high school counselor or academic teacher, and a non-refundable $80 application fee.

You may apply to GW via the Common Application or the Coalition Application.

Regardless of which application you choose, you will need to submit a non-refundable $80 application fee and submit your application by your preferred deadline.

Application Essay

The application essay provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate your interests and English language writing skills. You may choose one of two specific prompts that best allows you to share your story with the Admissions Committee. Detailed instructions can be found on the application.

Sending Supporting Documentation

Please note: The application is not complete and we cannot begin the application review until we receive your application fee and all required information.

Supporting documentation, including School Report, transcripts, and letters of recommendation, can be submitted (or requested) electronically via the application platform, via email to gwadmatgwu [dot] edu (gwadm[at]gwu[dot]edu), or via mail to our office:
     The George Washington University
     Office of Undergraduate Admissions
     800 21st St NW Suite 214
     Washington, D.C. 20052

Please note that electronic submission is preferred and will allow us to complete your application in a timely manner.

Please ensure that the applicant's legal name is included on all corresponding documentation. For applicants who use a name that differs from their legal name, please use the Chosen Name field to include that information.

All international applicants must provide a permanent, physical mailing address (that is not a post office box).

GW requires one letter of recommendation/evaluation, which can be from a high school counselor or an academic teacher. The letter must be submitted directly by the recommender. Online submission is preferred, but letters may also be sent to our office by the recommender by email to gwadmatgwu [dot] edu (gwadm[at]gwu[dot]edu) or post to our office.

Step 3: Submit Supplemental Application Components & Apply to Special Programs

The GW Admissions Committee carefully reviews each applicant based on academic background, the rigor of high school coursework, and GPA. In addition, the committee takes into consideration essays, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities. Submitting standardized test scores is optional for most applicants.

Because we take a holistic approach to the application review process, we have no minimum GPA or SAT/ACT requirements for admission. However, admission to GW is competitive; admitted students are typically strong academic students in their high school graduating class.

If you wish to submit an optional Writing Supplement in addition to the required application essay, our admissions committee will gladly review it. The GW supplemental essay is a chance for you to show your personality and make connections between your experiences and GW’s institutional values. While this optional essay may give additional context to the application, those who do not submit it will not be penalized.

GW is test-optional, which means you are not required to submit standardized test scores (SAT or ACT). However, if the following circumstances apply to you, then SAT/ACT test scores are required:

  • Applicants applying to the B.A./B.S.-M.D. program — If submitting ACT scores, the Science section is required for B.A./B.S.-M.D. applicants
  • Program Applicants who are homeschooled — GW will consider only the critical reading and math sections of the SAT for admission
  • Applicants who attend secondary schools that provide only narrative evaluations rather than some form of grading scale — GW will consider only the critical reading and math sections of the SAT for admission

If you are submitting SAT or ACT scores, please be mindful of GW’s test score codes:

  • SAT Code: 5246
  • ACT Code: 0664

A note about test scores

You should indicate your test option on your application for admission. Once an application has been submitted, you have a limited time to change your selection in your portal. After that window has closed, the selection cannot be changed. If you have previously submitted test scores to our office but indicate on the application that you would not like your scores considered, test scores will not be viewed during application review.

Portfolio reviews are required for our BFA programs, with the exception of the BFA in Interior Architecture. Your portfolio should tell your story in a way that makes sense to you. We have no restrictions or requirements on what should be in your portfolio other than what you believe to be your strongest work. It is important to make sure that this is the best representation of you as an artist, and of your work up to the point of your application.

Here are a few portfolio guidelines:

  • All students are required to submit 12-20 completed works of art.
  • The included work should be your best and most recent work.
  • If possible, the work should be related to your area of interest.

Important Note

It is very important that the majors match on both the application and SlideRoom. Please take care when selecting the program (e.g., B.A. in Fine Arts vs. B.F.A. in Fine Arts), and make sure you've selected the same major in both locations.

You may receive credit for college-level coursework through International Baccalaureate (IB) or College Board Advanced Placement (AP) examinations, allowing you to skip introductory courses, enter higher-level classes, and fulfill general education requirements.

Find out if you can bring credits to GW

First-year applicants may apply to join a special academic program. The programs below require an additional essay.

B.A./B.S.-M.D. Program

A joint program between GW's Columbian College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the B.A./B.S-M.D. program is designed for students who have decided to become physicians.

Application Requirements

Corcoran Scholars

Corcoran Scholars are supported in their artistic pursuits as they explore a diversity of practices and interpretations across disciplines, gaining a deeper understanding of the creative process and its place in a greater cultural context.

Application Requirements

Step 4: Send Official Transcripts and School Report

Alongside your application materials, you must submit transcripts for your entire secondary school career (four years of academic study including the current year in progress).

Transcripts are required from each secondary school attended as well as marks from any national examinations.

Official Transcripts and School Report Submission Procedures

First-year applicants must have transcripts for their entire secondary school career (four years of academic study including the current year in progress). Transcripts are required from each secondary school attended as well as marks from any national examinations. Also, applicants are expected to submit a mid-year report from their senior year which includes grades for all classes. For Early Decision I students, first quarter or first trimester grades will fulfill this requirement.

Your School Counselor or other School Official may send an electronic transcript and School Report directly to our office. They may also email your transcript and School Report to gwadmatgwu [dot] edu (gwadm[at]gwu[dot]edu). The transcript must be sent directly from the sender's school email address in order to be considered official.

Step 5: Raise High!

You’re among the many bright, talented, and diverse students from across the world who want to study in Washington, D.C., and put knowledge in action through research, internships, global experiences, and service. To us, you’re already revolutionary!

How to check your application status

After submitting your application, you will receive information on how to access your admissions portal. Please allow up to 7-10 business days for GW to receive your application. In your portal, you will be able to track application materials, upload or request some documents, and, eventually, view your admission decision.

Please allow several weeks from the date you submit your application and supplemental material to process your documents and post them in your admissions portal. During the busy application period, your portal is your best resource, as we are continually updating students' applications and documents.

We encourage you to browse our frequently asked questions (FAQ), including the most relevant ones below. Standardized Tests

What is GW’s SAT and ACT (standardized) test policy?

GW continues to be test-optional for the majority of applicants, as we have been since 2015. Unless you are in a population noted below, all first-year applicants may choose whether or not to submit their standardized test scores on their application. At this time, the following populations are still required to submit SAT/ACT scores:

  • Applicants applying to the accelerated B.A./B.S.-M.D. Program (if submitting ACT scores, the Science section is required for B.A./B.S.-M.D. applicants)
  • Applicants who are homeschooled
  • Applicants who attend secondary schools that provide only narrative evaluations rather than some form of grading scale

Note, GW considers only the critical reading and math sections of the SAT for admission. Except for B.A./B.S.-M.D. applicants, the ACT Science section is not required.

Are there minimum SAT/ACT or GPA requirements for admission to GW?

Because we take a holistic approach to the application review process, we have no minimum GPA or SAT/ACT requirements for admission. However, admission to GW is competitive, and admitted students are typically strong academic students in their high school graduating class.

You must choose whether to apply as test-optional prior to submitting your application. Once your application has been received, you will have 2 weeks to change that selection in your portal. After that time, it cannot be changed.

Please know that following decision release, we will ask admitted students to submit test scores for research purposes.

Does GW superscore standardized tests?

Yes, GW will superscore both the ACT and SAT.

Planning Your Visit to Campus

The George Washington University offers in-person tours and events, plus virtual engagement opportunities, all of which can be found on our Visit GW page.

When is the best time to visit campus?

The best time is the time that works for you, and luckily, GW is beautiful and vibrant at all times of the year! However, we do love our Cherry Blossoms, which typically bloom in March or April.

Do I need an appointment to visit campus?

We strongly encourage visitors to register in advance for a campus visit, as many sessions do reach capacity. We accommodate walk-ins only on a space-available basis. View all of our engagement opportunities on our Visit GW webpage.

When is the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Welcome Center open?

Our office is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (except university holidays) plus select Saturdays, with extended phone and email hours offered during peak seasons. View engagement opportunities on our Visit GW webpage.

Are open houses offered during the fall/spring?

In addition to campus tours, we offer a variety of programs and events throughout the year. See all of our opportunities on our Visit GW webpage.

Connect With Admissions Staff & Students

Can I make an appointment to speak with an admissions representative?

Appointments are not necessary; our staff is available to assist you by phone or email. However, if you wish to schedule a meeting or make an appointment, you can reach out to your admission representative.

Can I meet with someone regarding my specific academic area of interest?

Our tour guides offer a wealth of GW information, from academics to extracurriculars. In addition, we have students available from each school and many aspects of student life. Their contact information is available from the Welcome Center.

The Campus Visit Experience

What is included on a campus tour?

All campus tours are led by student guides, who offer their own GW story and current student insights. On Foggy Bottom Campus tours, which last about an hour, you will travel from the University Student Center through our downtown D.C. campus, seeing campus highlights such as academic buildings, Kogan Plaza, Potomac Park, University Yard, and more. School-specific tours are also offered throughout the year; view details and register for a tour!

Can I talk with current students during my visit?

Of course - you will have the opportunity to speak with many current students while on campus! Students staff the reception desk in the Welcome Center and will happily answer any questions you may have during check-in - and your tour guide will be a current student who will share their story and answer your questions. If you’d like to speak with a student from a specific discipline, ask at the Welcome Center or contact our office.

Can I sit in on a class?

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer class visits.

Will I be able to tour a residence hall?

We try to show a residence hall on campus tours, but we are not always able to provide that experience to visitors. To see all of GW's housing options, explore GW's residence halls online. (Note that hall assignments are subject to change from year to year; this year's first-year residence halls may not be designated for first-years next year.)

Travel & Logistics

How close is the airport or train & bus stations?

As the only D.C. school with our very own Metro stop on campus, travel is just a ride away. Located on the Silver, Blue, and Orange lines, the Metro can take you to Union Station for rail and bus travel (15 minutes) or to Reagan National Airport (DCA) to travel by air (20 minutes). View a map of the Metro Rail system.

Where is the Admissions parking lot?

While we do not offer free parking for guests, there is paid GW parking available for visitors below the University Student Center and Science and Engineering Hall. Since we are located in the heart of D.C., we recommend using public transit or alternative methods of transportation to reach GW.

Can I stay in a residence hall when I visit campus?

We do not offer overnight visits. View a list of local hotels offering GW rates.

Do you have student fly-in programs?

GW does not currently offer a fly-in program for prospective students.
