Need-Based Aid

Need-based assistance is only available to eligible U.S. citizens and permanent residents. International students are not eligible for need-based assistance.

GW's Office of Student Financial Assistance reviews financial details for all eligible admitted students and administers need-based aid. Your financial need is determined based on the information you supply through the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Use the Net Price Calculator to determine your potential eligibility for financial aid and calculate your possible out-of-pocket expenses.

Types of Assistance

The Office of Student Financial Assistance offers several types of funding to help you bridge the gap between your contribution and the total cost of attendance. This includes:

  • federal and institutional grants
  • institutional scholarships
  • loans
  • the opportunity to participate in the Federal Work-Study Program
  • educational benefits for student veterans and military personnel

Financial Aid Deadlines

You are required to meet all financial aid deadlines to be fully considered for need-based assistance. We prefer that financial aid documents be submitted by your application deadline for timely financial aid packaging. Admitted students with financial aid applications completed by the deadline will receive their financial aid package shortly after receiving their offer of admissions.
